KIRI TE KANAWA SUMMERTIME GEORGE GERSHWIN, BEST HD QUALITY

    2:40

This is a tribute to the wonderful New Zealand soprano Dame Kiri Te Kanawa. Te Kanawa'a golden voice has known to shine in the works of Mozart, Strauss, Verdi, Handel and Puccini. She gained tremendous exposure when she was seen and heard around the world in 1981 by an estimated 600 million people when she sang Handel's Let the Bright Seraphim at the wedding of Charles, Prince of Wales, and Lady Diana Spencer. This is a beautiful recording of Summertime from the George Gershwin opera Porgy And Bess. Enjoy! Thanks For Your Comments.

Summertime George Gershwin | Acoustic Cover by the Moon Loungers

To mark the last official week of summer, here's a final offering from our Summer Acoustic Covers album. Big thanks to Rebecca and the team at the Matara Centre for letting us film in their stunning grounds!

Okay so we aren't exactly breaking new ground by covering Summertime - according to Wikipedia there are already more than 33,000 covers out there! The song was originally written by George Gershwin in 1935 for the opera Porgy and Bess, but went on to become a jazz standard that would be recorded by the likes of Billie Holiday, Miles Davis and Ella Fitzgerald.

Our version was filmed on a particularly hot summer's day next to the lake at Matara, with dragon flies buzzing around and the fish enjoying the sunshine - all making a perfect backdrop for the song. Click here if you'd like to see the chords we used -

George Gershwin (September 26, 1898 -- July 11, 1937) was an American composer and pianist. Gershwin's compositions spanned both popular and classical genres, and his most popular melodies are widely known. Among his best known works are the orchestral compositions Rhapsody in Blue (1924) and An American in Paris (1928), as well as the opera Porgy and Bess (1935).
Gershwin studied piano under Charles Hambitzer and composition with Rubin Goldmark and Henry Cowell. He began his career as a song plugger, but soon started composing Broadway theatre works with his brother Ira Gershwin and Buddy DeSylva. He moved to Paris to study with Nadia Boulanger, where he began to compose An American in Paris. After returning to New York City, he wrote Porgy and Bess with Ira and the author DuBose Heyward. Initially a commercial failure, Porgy and Bess is now considered one of the most important American operas of the twentieth century. Gershwin moved to Hollywood and composed numerous film scores until his death in 1937 from a brain tumor.
Gershwin's compositions have been adapted for use in many films and for television, and several became jazz standards recorded in many variations. Countless celebrated singers and musicians have covered his songs.

    Nina Simone - Summertime

    5:41

    Nina Simone - Summertime
Summertime is an aria composed by George Gershwin for the 1935 opera Porgy and Bess. The lyrics are by DuBose Heyward, the author of the novel Porgy on which the opera was based, although the song is also co-credited to Ira Gershwin by ASCAP
The song soon became a popular and much recorded jazz standard, described as without doubt... one of the finest songs the composer ever wrote....Gershwin's highly evocative writing brilliantly mixes elements of jazz and the song styles of African-Americans in the southeast United States from the early twentieth century.Composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim has characterized Heyward's lyrics for Summertime and My Man's Gone Now as the best lyrics in the musical theater. The song is recognized as one of the most covered songs in the history of recorded music, with more than 33,000 covers by groups and solo performers
There are over 25,000 recordings of Summertime. In September 1936, a recording by Billie Holiday was the first to hit the US pop charts, reaching #12 Other notable recordings include those by Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald in 1957, Sam Cooke also in 1957, Gene Vincent and Miles Davis in 1958, The Marcels in 1961, The Tornadoes in 1964, Janis Joplin with Big Brother and the Holding Company on the 1968 album Cheap Thrills as well as The Zombies. The most commercially successful version was by Billy Stewart, who reached #10 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1966.
The Doors recorded the song live on albums including Live in Boston. English singer-songwriter Nick Drake recorded the song in 1967 or 1968, and it is included on the posthumous anthology album Tanworth In Arden. In 1970, Deep Purple released their single Black Night, whose riff was based on the bassline from Ricky Nelson's recording of Summertime. The Fun Boy Three released their fifth single, Summertime in July 1982. In 1998, Morcheeba and Hubert Laws recorded the song for the Red Hot Organization's compilation album Red Hot + Rhapsody, a tribute to Gershwin, which raised money for various charities devoted to increasing AIDS awareness and fighting the disease. Norah Jones and Marian McPartland has a cover at the Tanglewood Jazz Festival Aug. 30, 2003. Avi Kaplan, of the a cappella group Pentatonix, recorded a version as part of 'The Spaulding Sessions, Volume 2' on May 9th 2012.
