Ambrose and his Orchestra - Knock, Knock, Whos there? Soloist - Max Bacon

    3:14

Russo - British Recordings present: Ambrose and his Orchestra with Knock Knock. The drummer Max Bacon deprived of sweets sings the solo!

Recorded August 15th 1936 on Decca F6052. Edgar Jackson wrote in Grammophone in October 1936 - Knock Knock is Max Bacon's record, and no harm would have been done had it been so labelled. max sings choruses one after another in his amusing Yiddisher dialect, and puts them over as only he could.

Compiled by Sir Isaac, for the jonjamg channel

    Billy Amstell:
Max Bacon, besides being a top class drummer was also no mean Jewish comic, very popular with audiences with his 'fractured' English (among other peculiarities was that he could never manage the letter 'v' which invariably came out as 'w', so that a word like 'seven' always sounded as 'sewen'). They all knew his William T'hell and Little Red Hooding Ride (whoever's slipper this is can be my missis) routines, plus his recordings of Cohen the Crooner, Knock, Knock, Who's There?, Shut the Door (They're Coming Through The Window) and When Gimble Hits the Cymbal which featured his solid drumming...

Max worked with Ambrose nearly all his drumming life. He knew perhaps more than most 'Ammy's' constant demand for musical perfection... Despite his fine drumming, never obtrusive but played with real 'lift' plus his deft technique on the cymbal, Max came in for his share of Bert's criticism...

    Ivor Mairants:
Ambrose would put his bow hand in front of his mouth and whisper to me, sitting in the front, ... about Max Bacon, 'Listen to him, all he does all night is chew sweets instead of keeping tempo.' Max was a marvellous drummer...

    Billy Amstell:
I remember Max Bacon as a warm and liberal human being. On more than one occasion I witnessed his generosity after we had finished rehearsing in the BBC studios near Waterloo Station in 1935. The studios were contained in a converted railway arch in the back streets of the Cut... As we made our way there we often came across groups of young kids, poorly clad, many barefooted and probably neglected, running around the street. Two or three times I saw Max dig his hand into his trousers pocket and pull out a fistful of half-crowns which he gave the ragged urchins for a fish and chip supper.

Bert Ambrose and His Orchestra. He was also in a few other bands such as those of Ronnie Munro and Arthur Lally. One of the best drummers of his era, he even wrote a book on the subject, 'Max On Swing,' in 1934. He was noted for his dry wit between and during songs and developed this into a successful comedy act of his own, releasing a number of solo comedy novelty records in the mid to late 30s as well as appearing on many popular radio shows such as Workers' Playtime. Later he got into films, appearing in a number of Arthur Askey films in the 1940s and later appearances on TV shows in the 1960s. He also played the bandleader in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Despite being born in Britain his comedy style was to play up his European Jewish roots with a typical Yiddish accent.

    GTR - Here I Wait

    4:58

GTR were a rock band founded in 1985 by former Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett and Yes and Asia guitarist Steve Howe. The band name came from an abbreviation of guitar. Besides Hackett and Howe, GTR featured vocalist Max Bacon (ex-Moby Dick, Nightwing and Bronz); bassist Phil Spalding (ex-Bernie Torme, Toyah, Mike Oldfield and Original Mirrors); and American drummer Jonathan Mover (ex-Marillion, later of Steve Vai fame).

GTR were notable for attempting to create a band with guitar and synthesizer sounds, but without the use of conventional keyboard synths, using guitar/synthesisers instead. Hackett and Howe's guitars were outfitted with Roland synthesiser trigger pickups, which used the vibrations of the strings to create MIDI signals used to play the synthesizers. While this may have worked in the studio, they were forced to take a keyboardist on the road because of the poor tracking qualities of the guitar synths.

Always loved the guitar bit from 2:20 or so. The band broke up after releasing only one studio album and the members went on to do other things, but it is still available.

    Lyrics:
    I remember everything,
    Just the way it was.
You and I were almost one,
    We shared the same road.

Talk of love will last forever,
    Through the rack and ruin.
    All the pain and pleasure,
    That lead to our undoing.

    Here I wait,
    Just to be forgiven.
    Here I wait,
    Until we stand together.
    Here I wait,
    Trying to cross the borderline.
    Here I wait,
    Until we stand together.

    Trying for a new solution,
    Tracing back my roots.
There I found a different sign,
    That took me by surprise.

I had always thought of you,
    As someone I could trust.
It came as such a shock to learn,
You play life as you must.

    Here I wait,
    I can't wait forever.
    Here I wait,
Where love is sure to find me.
    Here I wait,
    Trying to cross the borderline.
    Here I wait.
    Until we stand together.

    I wait for you...

    I wait for you...

    Here I wait.
    Here I wait.
    Here I wait.
    Here I wait.
    Until we stand together.

Max Bacon - Earth Moving Lyrics

    2:49

[Lyrics Max Bacon - Earth Moving]
I hear a voice from paradise,
Looks like a new day dawning.
So clear, I just open my eyes.
Can't you hear the voice calling?
I feel a rush in the air tonight,
I can feel the Earth moving.
Love is a beacon, a guiding light.
Can't you feel the Earth moving?
    Feel the Earth move,
Now I'm wrapped in a sweet love's arms.
    Reaching out for you.
There's something magic in the air tonight,
I can feel the Earth move.
    And it moves me.
Can't you hear the voice calling?
Looks like a new day dawning.
Reach out - it's a leap in the dark,
But there's no danger of falling.
Give out, give it straight from the heart.
    You feel like thunder rolling.
    It feels like thunder rolling.
    Feel the Earth move,
Now I'm wrapped in a sweet love's arms.
    Reaching out for you.
There's something magic in the air tonight,
I can feel the Earth move.
    Feel the Earth move,
Now I'm wrapped in a sweet love's arms.
    Reaching out for you.
There's something magic in the air tonight,
I can feel the Earth move.
    Feel the Earth move,
Now I'm wrapped in a sweet love's arms.
    Reaching out for you.
There's something magic in the air tonight,
