Coil - Rare Peter Christopherson interview EDIT

    7:48

Ten years to the week after Jhonn Balance's death and the end of Coil, I've thrown together a very revealing interview with Peter Christopherson recorded in 2008, a year or so before his own untimely passing. Peter approaches the subjects of early Psychic TV, musical goals and Balance's descent into alcoholism with the honesty and realistic appraisal that you would expect.

(Visuals were added to this to maintain interest for those who prefer to see their interviews. The full 25-minute interview has now been posted - - so consider this Coil-centric clip the Reader's Digest Sampler, except good...)

For the devoted - YOU SHOULD BE - let me also promote this 2-hour Coil interview:

As a tribute to my musical architects, who now both have left us, I put this up here. with the text in the videoslides as well.
Coil is unwound, the musick will stay. RIP

Coil - John Balance talks about what light pollution steals from our world

    1:27

To mark the 11th anniversary of the death of Jhonn Balance and - by extension - the end of the unique and fearless sonic adventures of Coil, I offer this very brief snippet of philosophy from a June 20th, 2001 interview with Radio Inferno. It does offer insight and context regarding how the desire to create 'Musick To Play In the Dark - and to share and learn from friends, is the polar (and preferred) opposite to the alienation of urban 'light pollution' (aka 'photopollution' and 'luminous pollution'). We surely need the night and the stars to dream.

I just love this song. I'm old and very tired John Balance sings. Not long after, he died. As if he was anticipating (or even longing for) his near death. R.I.P, John, your music has become part of my live since I was a child.

Check out my channel for more Coil interviews and tracks.

Formed in London in 1983 by John Balance as a solo side project to Psychic TV, Coil developed into a full-scale musical group in 1984, when Balance cemented a partnership with Peter 'Sleazy' Christopherson. Christopherson had been a founder of Psychic TV and member of Throbbing Gristle. For over twenty years Coil would be at the forefront of European experimentalism and electronic music.
John Balance (1962--2004) died tragically in an accident at his home on November 13th, 2004.
Peter Christopherson decided that, with the passing of John Balance, Coil would not continue.
Peter Martin Christopherson died 24 November 2010 (aged 55).

    Jhonn Balance by Wooden Wand

    6:10

Jhonn Balance | Wooden Wand | Album: Blood Oaths Of The New Blues | Fire Records | 2013

    Lyrics:

In an age of isolation you start believing that nothing will last
Untethered you sewer some ties to an unquiet past
This evening I threw up my heart - it looked like honeycomb!
Breaking the seal on the letters is even better when nobody's home

Sure monotomy of pleasure, sure surveillance in a fortress of gold
But what makes you think I haven't had better offers on my soul?
I'd sooner chalk this trip up to existence and leave only my bones
Cuz there is much to be gleaned from the mirror when nobody's home

    Nobody's home
    Nobody's home
    Nobody's home

I was thinkin' 'bout Jhonn Balance - how he seemed like a man you could trust
I was thinkin' 'bout Jhonn Balance - he never dallied with the shadows in the dusk
Walking serene like an animal man all alone
It keeps it all between the ditches on rainy days when nobody's home

    Nobody's home
    Nobody's home
    Nobody's home

All deranged in my senses I was puking before the servants of The Slave
A trembling a thick-minded skel hallucinating his grave
But now I've amassed enough life so that I may go on just dreaming forever - let it be known
Immortality beckons but this house it ain't nobody's home
    Nobody's home
    Nobody's home
    Nobody's home

FIRE IN THE SKY Last appearancе of Peter Sleazy Christopherson

    8:00

Last appearancе of Peter Sleazy Christopherson. Four days after this record he left us. Something has definitively broken inside me. And 1 more thing - if my name & surname is translated to Englsh from Russian, it becomes John Balance A little bit blasphemously, but that's so. And 1 more thing - if my name & surname is translated to Englsh from Russian, it becomes John Balance A little bit blasphemously, but that's so. By the way I've been at this very place (shown on video) in 2002.

Selvaggina, Go Back into the Woods (2004)

Selvaggina, Go Back into the Woods is a limited-edition live album, recorded on June 11, 2004 in Jesi, Italy. This appears to be the full set of the concert, and contains a new version of every track from previous studio effort Black Antlers. As such, the question of which has more value to the listener is to be considered. Selvaggina is well-recorded and excellently performed, and some of the kinks of the Antlers versions of the tracks have been ironed out. For example, opener The Gimp (Sometimes) is here a more vibrant and shorter version than its counterpart, but retains its aura of goofy menace. with Sun Ra retains the vibe of the Antlers version, but with more urgent vocalizations from John Balance, and animated work from Tom Edwards on the marimba. There's a telling bit of stage banter from Balance about this concert: We're truncating, we're making shorter the things tonight because we haven't got enough time unfortunately to do the long versions we wanted to do, so apologies for that, but maybe you're being saved from our indulgences, I don't know. The editing that the band does on the songs here is very noticeable, sounding refined and worked-on, improving on the studio versions in every way. Of all of the live albums that Coil released in the last few years of its existence, this is the best, hands-down. This may be one of the harder pieces of the Coil catalog to track down (this was limited to a mere 230 copies), and it is undoubtedly one of the best. [Allmusic.com]
