    3:10

Long John Baldry - Let the heartaches begin 1968

    #1 in UK

I can hear the guitars start to play
    And very soon they say
I was a fool to turn my love away
And with each glass of wine I feel a glow
    And very soon I know
I was a fool to let my baby go

    So let the heartaches begin
    I can't help it, I can't win
I've lost that girl for sure
    Tears won't help anymore
    Yes let the heartaches begin
    I can't help it, I can't win
I've lost that girl for sure
    Now she's gone
I can't hold back the tears anymore

I can see the couples dancin' through the night
    They hold each other tight
As they dance of love till the morning light
The soft embraces that they seem to share
    Just make me feel aware
Of the lonliness I find so hard to bear

    So let the heartaches begin
    I can't help it, I can't win
I've lost that girl for sure
    My tears won't help anymore
Yes let the heartaches, heartaches begin
    I just can't help it,you know that I just can't win
I've lost that girl for sure
    And now that she's gone
I can't hold back the tears anymore

Long John Baldry with this almost spiritual and touching song. He's the inventor of the (blues-based) start of popmusic in Great Brittain and influenced, worked with or was discoverer of several artists such as Rod Stewart, Elton John, Mick Jagger, Charlie Watts, Keith Richard, etc. A voice never to forget but also an icon of popmusic!

John Baldry & Elton John - Flying

    6:51

From the 1971 John Baldry album It Ain't Easy. Side 1 was produced by Rod Stewart and side 2 by Elton John. This song was written by Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood. The band backing up Baldry on this recording was Hookfoot, featuring Caleb Quaye on guitar and Roger Pope on drums.

Elton John and Rod Stewart had both worked with John Baldry back in the 60s, when Elton (Reg Dwight) was keyboardist in the band Bluesology. Elton made up his new name at that time taken the name Elton from Elton Dean, the sax player, and the name John from Long John Baldry!

Long John Baldry Band, featuring Kathi McDonald

    6:28

April 1993, the Fabrik club, Hamburg Germany, Audio from a live NDR radio broadcast, synced up to John Lee Sanders personal video footage from the tour, filmed from the stage, playing keys with one hand and filming the band with the other. This concert was released by Stony Plain as Onstage Tonight one of Baldry's most popular cds. the Band was unaware until the day of the gig that there was to be a live broadcast, so we just did our usual amazing live set. That's Papa John King on the guitar solo.
    Eric Webster, hammond organ
Butch Coulter, Harp & acoustic guitar
    Al Webster, drums
    Tom Knowles, bass
and John Lee on keyboards, sax and vocals, I'm not in any of the shots because I'm filming.
Long John is sadly no longer with us.
He passed away from a lung infection in July 2005, and this tour was the happiest time touring with him.

this was my first time in Europe as a touring musician, the best audiences in the world. I grew up in Louisiana and the Mississippi Delta, and have found
more acceptance and respect for our music than in the places where this music was born.
This was the band's first tour in Europe, We had just played East and West Berlin, where the wall had just fell a few years earlier, and there was still great excitement.
This club where we played was close to the red light district of Hamburg where the Beatles first gained notoriety, in the Star club where we played a year later.

This file's info has a lot more details and nice things to tell about the band that time in Europe. Enjoy anyway!

Long John Baldry & Kathi Mcoonald - Insane Asylum

    5:27

I went out to the insane asylum
And I found my baby out there
I said please come back to me darlin'
What in the world are you doin' here?
Then the little girl raised up her head
Tears was streamin' down from her eyes
    And these are the things
    That the little girl said

When your love has ceased to be (Lord, have mercy)
There's no other place for me (Mmmm)
If you don't hold me in your arms (Oh child oh child)
I'd rather be here from now on
Some people have an halfway fare
Without your love I ain't nowhere
Oh I can't eat and I can't sleep (oh child oh child)
Lord I can't even live in peace (Mmmm)
Please take me baby for your slave (Oooh)
And save me from that early grave
Some people have an halfway fare
Without your love I ain't nowhere

And then sorrow struck my heart
Tears began to stream down from my eyes
The only woman that I ever loved in whole my life
Out here in a place in a condition like this
And I began to thinkin' about what my mama told me when I was a little boy
She told me when I couldn't help myself, to get down on my knees and pray
Then I fell down on my knees
And these are the words that I said

Save me save me save me babe,
Save me save me save me dear,
Whoa I don't know just how we made it
But I'm so glad our love is here
But I'm so glad our love is here...

Any day now I will hear you say 'Goodbye, my love'
And you'll be on your way
Then my wild beautiful bird, you will have flown, woah
Any day now, I'll be all alone, whoa-oa-oa-oa-oa

Any day now, when your restless eyes meet someone new
    Oh, to my sad surprise
Then the blue shadows will fall all over town, woah
Any day now (any day now)
Love will let me down (any day now), whoa-oa-oa-oa-oa

I know I shouldn't want to keep you
If you don't want to stay-ay
    Until you're gone forever
I'll keep holdin' on for dear life
    Holding you this way
    Begging you to stay

Any day now, when the clock strikes 'Go?
    You'll call it off
And then my tears will flow
Then my wild beautiful bird, you will have flown, woah
Any day now (any day now)
Love will let me down (any day now), 'cause you won't be around

Then the blue shadows will fall all over town, woah
Any day now (any day now)
Love will let me down (any day now), 'cause you won't be around

Any day now, you won't be around

    00

Brilliant recording of the Elton John band with Long John Baldry from Baldry's 1972 album Everything Stops for Tea, which was produced by Elton John. Ray Cooper's percussion and Elton's backing vocals steal the show here on this very fun cover!

Elton John had long been associated with John Baldry, playing in his back-up band in the sixties, and then producnig two of his albums in the seventies. It was from John Baldry in 1967 that Reg Dwight (as Elton was called then) took his new stage name - combining Elton from their saxophone player Elton Dean and John from Long John Baldry!
