Whats the Use of Wings -Brian Bedford- chords-cover

    3:27

guitar i think is twohalf steps lower

never heard this-someone sent this to me. Its the counter to the PPM song if I had wings

It should be called the Ode to dysfunctional relationships.

    What's the Use of Wings?
    (Brian Bedford)

    G D EM
I could have been a giant said the bonsai tree
    C G D
But someone bound my roots and held me down.
    G D EM
I could have reached the Heavens said the snowy owl
    C D G
But they clipped my wings and kept me on the ground.
    C D G
I think I heard them tell me that they loved me
    C G D
That they'd care for me--without them I would die
    G D EM
But what's the use of roots if you can't spread them?
    C D G
What's the use of wings if you can't fly?

I could have been a singer said the Myna bird
But they caged me and told me what to say.
I could have run forever said the pony
But they bridled me and made me go their way.

I think I heard them tell me that they loved me
That they'd care for me forever so it seems
What's the use of voices without freedom?
What's the use of living other's dreams?

Why do people cage the things they love the most?
Is it simply that they fear to be alone?
If you give you're love it's freedom, it will stay awhile G D Am
If it leaves you, it was never yours to own

I could have found adventure said the angelfish
Now my world's so small there's nowhere left to go.
I could have ruled a kingdom said the lion
Now this land inside my head is all I know.

I think I heard them tell me that they loved me
That they'd care for me, and tell me it's alright
But what's the use of life without adventure?
What's the use of strength if you can't fight?

Why do people cage the things they love the most?
Is it simply that they fear to be alone?
If you give you're love it's freedom, it will stay awhile
If it leaves you, it was never yours to own

I know I heard them tell me that they loved me
That they'd care for me, without them I would die
But what's the use of roots if you can't spread them?
What's the use of wings if you can't fly?

This is from the album Other Roads by the John Wright Band.

    Artisan: Speed

    1:57

    Speed
Performance by Artisan (Hillary Spencer, Jacey Bedford, and Brian Bedford)
Lyrics and music copyright Brian Bedford
(I should note here that this Brian Bedford is not an actor.)
    Lyrics:

Cased in steel and strapped in heat,
    Hurtling down an endless street,
Heading for where the white lines meet…

Torque from the engine screams from the wheel
Rubber on tarmac steel biting steel
Straddle your charger saddle your steed
When chasing the future speed's what you need

    CHORUS:
And there's no time, time to think
    No time to wonder
No time to stop and stare
Keep moving or you will go under

Don't think of why and don't think of how
And don't think of where think only of now
As greedy for speed you race down the track
With eyes straight ahead there's no looking back

Fast acting fast food high speed fast living
Time waits for no man time's unforgiving
Faster and faster 'round the wheel spins
A race that is racing, tell me who wins

Time can't be wasted, speed is the key
Look back on the journey what did you see
For time is the villain time is no friend
From pit stop to pit stop – the race never ends.

    Hardcastles Rake

    2:01

This is a song based on a poem by Yorkshire dialect poet Dorothy Una Radcliffe. The Tune is by Brian Bedford of Artisan. I have meddled with the words of both the Artisan and Radcliffe versions to make the story clearer.

This is what I sing :-
There's no better dog than Hardcastle's rake,
Not an hundred guineas would Hardcastle take,
For his walleyed dog, and Ben is a man,
Who'll take good money wherever he can.

But Rake's worth more to him than brass,
And he loves that dog far more than his lass,
Or his bairns, at least so the Dales' folk say,
And his old lass laughs with 'happen he may'.

    There's ...

The family's fed by sheepdog work,
And Rake is a dog that never will shirk,
On a winter's night he snores by the hearth,
But at slightest stir from fold or garth,
He's at our Ben's side; together they'll go,
Out on the moor in rain and snow,
And a few hours later they both come in,
Tired and hungry and dirty as sin.

    There's ...

When our Ben goes on his last long trudge,
Down't valley of death through rain and sludge,
When at last he gets to that golden gate,
There'll be trouble in heaven if Rake his mate,
Can't pass, our Ben'll rampage and shout,
If any saint shuts his sheepdog out,
If Peter refuses to have him by gow,
At heaven's gate there'll be one hell of a row!

    There's..

    -----------------------------------------------

There are various versions of her poem - she obviously kept working on it. In 1926 it looked like this :-

There's no better dog than Hardcastle's Rake
Not a hundred guineas would Hardcastle take
For his wall-eyed dog. And Ben is a man
Who takes good money whenever he can.

But Rake's worth more to him than brass
And Hardcastle loves him more than his lass
Or his bairns. At least, so the Dales folk say,
And his old lass laughs Well, happen he may

For t'bairns are fed by sheepdog's work
And Rake is a dog that never'll shirk
On a winters neet, he'll snore on t'hearth
And at slightest stir in fold or garth
He's at our Bens side. Together they'll go
Out on t'moor in hail and snow
And some hours later they'll both come in
Tired and famished and dirty as sin.

When our Ben goes on his last long trudge
Down t'valley of death, through rain and slutch
And gets at last to t'Golden Gate
There'll be trouble in Heaven if Rake his mate
Can't pass. Old Ben will rampage and shout
If any saint shuts his sheepdog out.
If Peter refuses to have him, by gow,
At yon gate there'll be a heck of a row.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

By 1946 it was like this, she'd really thickened the dialect, and not improved it, in my opinion :-

THERE'S no better dog nor Hardcastle's Rake:
Not a hundred guineas would Hardcastle take.
For his wall-eyed dog: an' Ben is a man
Who takes good money whenever he can!
But Rake's worth more to him nor brass,
An' Hardcastle luves him more nor his lass
Nor his bairns: at least so our neebors say:
    An' his owd lass laughs wi', Happen, he may;
But our bairns are fed by a sheep-dog's work,
    An' Rake is a dog 'at niver 'ull shirk;
    On a winter's neet he'll snore on t' hearth,
An' at slightest stir in t' fold or t' garth
He's at our Ben's side; togither they 'ull go
    Out on t' moor in hail or snow;
An' some hours later they'll baith coom in
Tired an' famished, an' dirty as sin. . . .
When our Ben goes on his last lang trudge,
Doon t' Valley o' Death, thro' rain an' sludge,
An' wins at last to t' Gowden Gate,
Theer'll be trouble in Heaven if Rake, his mate,
Can't pass; our Ben 'ull rampage an' shout
    If ony saint shuts his sheep-dog out;
If Peter refuses to have him? By gow!
At yon gate theer'll be a hell of a row!

A Voice in Africa Irene Bedford - Rhyl - Sings They Cant Write To Tell Us Casuarina

    4:06

Irene lives in Kempston, Bedford and is passionate about raising money for Utange Orphanage Kenya.
This song is about the African children's gratitude for aid that they receive from people like us, and 'the feeling in our hearts is their reply'.

Irene Grant-Jones sings the original track, 'They can't write to tell us' as a backing track for some amazing thought provoking images coordinated by Brian and Karen Bayliss from BKB Photography and Richard West, sound engineer from Level Recordings.

Irene, from Kempston, Bedford whose roots are in Rhyl, North Wales, taught the children of Utange to sing this song when she visited them for the official opening of the orphanage in January 2012. Recently Irene and Tim recorded the song in their local studio in preparation for the project below:

A meeting with Debbie Scott, the founder of Utange Orphanage led to an unexpected journey to Kenya which took singer and poet Irene Grant-Jones on a creative venture that led to the launch her poetry anthology, 'A Voice in Africa'.
Raising money for Utange Orphanage Kenya. The 'hot spot' on 9 February 2012 was Kempston.

In freezing conditions over 130 people turned out from far and wide for the launch of Irene,s poetry anthology with pencil drawings by Chas Leslie called, 'A Voice in Africa' at Salam's Indian Restaurant, Kempston, Bedfordshire, UK.
Accompanist, Tim Grant-Jones transported a piano there to accompany Irene as she sang Nessun Dorma. During the evening, Irene recalled the moment when she met Debbie Scott, the founder of Utange Orphanage Kenya. This was the moment which took Irene on an unexpected journey to Kenya that was to steer her into a creative realm that engaged the support of 23 businesses here in Bedfordshire. The anthology begins with a humorous poem called, 'Zips' and culminates with a heart rendering poem, 'Our song will never end'.

Irene's journey to work in the Kenyan Orphanage in January 2010 was shared by Lorna Milton from Three Counties Radio and the late Ian Pearce who were there to record the official opening of the Utange Orphanage. Ian's coverage of the opening on the Lorna Milton Afternoon Show brought tears to listener's eyes here in the UK as hearts were touched by the poverty yet enthused by the Kenyan's hope for the future.

The poems and art work together create a third dimensional and unified experience for the reader who has the opportunity to participate in the day to day drama of life in Utange, Kenya.

Irene recalled the moment when the children in the orphanage sang their welcome songs. Emmanuel, a ten year old could not reach the top notes. As a singing teacher Irene encouraged him to create a particular mouth shape. Sure enough his top notes came out beautifully. A photograph of Emmanuel shown to Chas, was to become the image that fired Irene's imagination to collaborate with him on images for her other poems written whilst in Kenya.
